Candidato a sei premi oscar, film che potrebbe andare molto forte, ma che sfortunatamente si troverà a combattere contro La La Land di Chazelle e molti altri decisamente validi, ma nonostante ciò sono abbastanza convinto che questo film si porterà a casa qualcosa. Manchester by the sea è un film molto bello, diretto dal bravo regista Kenneth Lonergan che ha diretto bei film tra cui “Conta su di me”, “Margaret” ma anche sceneggiatore di film famosi tra cui Terapia e Pallottole ma sopratutto Gangs of New York di Scorsese. Lonergan è tornato alla regia a distanza di anni, con questo bel film, che racconta le vicende di Lee Chandler, interpretato da un eccezionale Casey Affleck già visto in “Il fuoco della vendetta” di Scott Cooper. Lee Chandler è un Casey Affleck che spala la neve, che mena la gente nei bar, che fa il tutto a fare a Boston, che è sempre scocciato o addirittura distaccato dalla vita e dalla società in generale. Lee tratta male i suoi clienti, e non apprezza la vita come invece dovrebbe fare, vive nella tristezza e nella solitudine. Ma un giorno arriva una chiamato e quindi una notizia, Lee dovrà tornare nella sua città natale, perchè dovrà occuparsi di un nipote dopo un fatto tragico avvenuto all’interno della sua famiglia, infatti è morto suo fratello, malato di cuore da molto tempo. Vedremo alcuni flashback della famiglia Chandler in cui avremo a che fare con questa famiglia di scorbutici, di violenti, di sboccati, di uomini duri e sporchi, ma che si vogliono un gran bene alla fine dei giochi. Un film sul ritorno a casa, ma anche sulla famiglia, sull’importanza del passato e sul presente. Infatti una volta tornato a Manchester By The Sea, Lee vive questo nuovo incontro con la città e con la comunità, lui non è Lee Chandler a Manchester By The Sea, lui è “quel” Lee Chandler, perchè forse nel suo passato ha fatto qualcosa, forse ha una brutta nomea in seguito ad un fatto, è il famigerato Lee Chandler ? Noi lo scopriremo nel corso del film, in cui seguiremo i pensieri di Lee che nella sua testa in molti momenti ricorderà degli attimi e delle situazioni del passato accadute a Manchester By The Sea. Un film che parla di famiglia, di passato e di presente, di scelte, ma anche di rapporto tra uomini, che può arginarsi molte volte ma che finisce per riallacciarsi ogni volta. film splendido, Affleck divino, Lonergan davvero molto bravo, un bel film con un gran bel montaggio che ci permetterà di scoprire che cosa davvero è accaduto a Lee nel passato, che cosa lo ha reso quello che è, ma anche che cosa potrebbe farlo cambiare. Insomma due ore e un quarto di film, molto lento in certi momenti, ma se seguito con attenzione può regalare molte emozioni, questo malinconico e bel film, che punta tutto sulla bravura di Casey Affleck. Sorprendente !
