The Neon Demon è un film del 2016 scritto e diretto da Nicolas Winding Refn. La pellicola ha partecipato in concorso al Festival di Cannes 2016. La trama del film è molto semplice : Jesse parte dalla Georgia e giunge a Los Angeles, dove vuole fare la modella, e dove vive in un motel abbastanza orribile, il cui gestore è un odioso e alquanto perverso Keanu Reeves che si chiama Hank e che forse vorrebbe insidiare Jesse dal punto di vista sessuale. Ma non solo, perchè forse Hank di notte entra in una stanza accanto a quella di Jesse al cui interno vive una ragazzina di tredici anni, che forse subirà violenze da parte di Hank. Jesse vuole fare la modella, inizialmente la vedremo portare delle fotografie fatte in precedenza con l’aiuto di un giovane fotografo, un ragazzo che forse è innamorato di lei e che verso la metà del film resterà deluso. Jesse vive nello squallore, ma allo stesso tempo è nuova, forse vergine, Jesse porta la luce, perchè è la novità in un ambiente in cui ci sono sempre le stesse persone, infatti è esilarante il fatto che quando Jesse diventerà una vera modella avrà a che fare sempre con le stesse quattro o cinque persone. Jesse quindi fregherà il posto, il lavoro, la luminosità a qualcuna di queste quattro o cinque persone e quindi comincerà ad essere in pericolo, perchè le modelle non sono da sottovalutare, perchè forse la uccideranno ma probabilmente le faranno anche qualcosa di peggio. Il film è splendido, fischiatissimo e contestatissimo a Cannes e dalla stampa in generale, gli hanno tirato i gatti morti a Refn come gli era già successo in precedenza per “Solo dio perdona”, altro bellissimo film di questo regista. Il film è anche molto interessante per un parallelismo che viene a crearsi, ovvero tra la storia di Jesse, che è nuova, tutti la guardano, tutti la acclama, e quella di Nicolas Winding Refn stesso, che è arrivato molto forte a Hollywood con “Drive” ancora molto giovane, film per il quale ha ricevuto diverse nomination e diversi premi. Successivamente però Refn comincia a fare di testa sua, comincia quindi a girare dei film che piacciono a lui, e che provocano sconforto ma anche squallore e che provocano shock negli spettatori, Molto interessante il gioco che viene fatto sul personaggio di Jesse da Elle Fanning che la interpreta decisamente bene e Nicolas Winding Refn che la scrive e la dirige. Infatti inizialmente Jesse ci apparirà come un angioletto, ma forse non è così buona, perchè la bellezza e l’aspirazione, in quantità elevante possono causare una rottura ed un distacco da se stessi. Bello il personaggio interpretato da Alessandro Nivola, fantastico in una sequenza in cui seguiamo questa sfilata di giovani donne tutte uguali che lui nemmeno guarda, ma nel momento in cui sfilerà Jesse, il personaggio di Nivola alzerà lo sguardo e non riuscirà più a staccarlo, rimanendo a bocca aperta. Grandissima Jena Malone nel ruolo di Ruby, una modella che conoscerà Jesse i primi giorni, con cui stringerà anche una strana amicizia ed uno strano legame, ma occhio che questa modella non è così a posto mentalmente, ciò non è legato ovviamente alla sua omosessualità, ma ad alcune pratiche necrofile e cannibali che praticherà. Geniali anche le due modelle androgine ed estremamente ritoccate, che non sono donne, ma sembrano robot o meglio macchine, la loro bellezza scompare, facendole diventare quindi dei mostri della società moderna, queste due sono Gigi e Sarah interpretate rispettivamente da Bella Heathcote e Abbey Lee. Film divertente per certi aspetti, spaventoso per altri e sorprendente per altri ancora. The Neon Demon è veramente un grande film, molto lento e sicuramente non adatto al grande pubblico, è un film in cui c’è in primo piano un’ossessiva ricerca in ogni inquadratura della bellezza, questo desiderio massimo di esprimere sempre la bellezza. Veramente sorprendente e con una scena finale tragicomica stupenda !
